Letters to Editor
Guest Marianne Rutter
Marianne Rutter and I go way back to 2008 and Barack Obama's primary campaign. Both of us are Democratic State Committee members from very politically conservative districts in the very liberal state of Massachusetts. Because of this, we have always been comrades-in-arms. Marianne developed a great system for getting Letters to the Editor published in her conservative local newspaper. I have combined the interview I did with her in the spring of 2018 with some updated commentary on how campaign managers can optimize Letters to the Editor for their races.

A lot of my guests have stressed the importance of local free media commonly referred to as earned media for election campaigns. I talked with Joe Halser about using community television to boost your candidate’s profile. The oldest form of earned media is the letter to the editor on behalf of a candidate. In the spring of 2018 I sat down with Marianne Rutter to talk about letters to the editor as part of the program Massachusetts Democratic Party was running. We talk about the state party program, the process of writing letter and take a look at a few examples.
